9 (Last Minute) Ways to Celebrate Harry Potter

As many of you know, this Saturday marks our favorite boy wizard’s 36th birthday.  It’s also – perhaps more importantly – the release of the brand new “8th Story:” Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

After making sure you have your book preordered from your local bookstore, it’s time to plan a little celebration for these super-important landmarks in Potter history! Below, we have compiled our essential list of must haves for a (last minute) Damn Good Harry Potter Shindig.

Harry Potter Shindig Essentials

1. House Pride

Every Harry Potter fan knows if they are bold and daring Gryffindors, loyal and true Hufflepuffs, intelligent and creative Ravenclaws or cunning and ambitious Slytherins.  Wear your colors & proclaim what house you belong to for the world to see.  Don’t be afraid to take your Hogwarts pride into casual wear, after all it IS summer vacation, who needs school robes when you can be a wizardnista?  Check out Polyvore for any inspiration – we found these great collections of casual Hogwarts attire from Adaline – check out her stuff here.

2. A Wand

One does not simply enter the wizarding world without a wand.  We recommend having your very own for any Harry Potter Party.  Seriously, you’re going to need one to cast some spells, plus it makes for a great prop.  Don’t have time to stop at Olivanders?  Its cool, just grab some chop sticks, hot glue and paint.  We’ve seen tutorials all over the internet for this fabulously easy and cheap way to make a one of the kind wand.  Check it out here!

3. Candy from Honeydukes

Annnyyything from the Trolley? Okay, so it doesn’t necessarily have to come from Honeydukes or the Hogwarts Express food cart, but you’d be a damn fool to think you’re going to get through a Harry Potter celebration without some sweets.  How do you think Harry, Ron and Hermione had energy for all their adventures?  Sugar High, my friends, and you’re gonna want one.  The creative lovelies over at The Swish family Robertson have gone through the trouble of making free Honeydukes printables – so you can customize your candy stash.

4. Butterbeer

Also an accomplice to obtaining a sugar high, this tasty treat is just what you need to really feel like you are in the three broomsticks.  If you are unable to hop over to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, may we suggest you try some home brew?  You’re an adult, why not try the alcoholic version too?  We think a taste test is in order!  We found a bunch of recipes from Intoxicology.com, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of our favorite drink.  Check them out!

5. A Magical Soundtrack

Wizard Rock is totally a thing, and its beyond awesome.  We’ve been lucky enough to see some of these highly skilled witches and wizards rock our socks off over the years, and can’t recommend a live show enough.  Check to see if anyone is in town near you and go see them!  If that’s not an option, luckily Spotify is here to save our groove again.  Ultimate Wizard Rock playlist here.  (Fun fact: the ladies of Damn Good Shindig’s first friend-hangout was in fact at a Wizard Rock concert at the beautiful Last Bookstore in downtown Los Angeles.)

6. Party Game: Pin the Clothes on The House Elves

A spin on the classic kids game, but this time it satisfies Harry Potter fans desire to help Dobby out.  Plus all proceeds and benefits go directly to S.P.E.W.  Don’t let all of Hermione’s efforts go to waste, get those elves free!  Find this cute Print over at Entropy Trading Co on Etsy to help set the mood!

7.  Floating Candle Decorations

We know it’s last minute, but that doesn’t mean your Harry Potter Shindig has to be decor-free.  You can create the floating candles you see in the great hall all with materials you most likely have in your house.  All you need for this magic touch are old paper towel or toilet paper rolls, LED tealights, fishing wire, paint & tape/hot glue.  Tape or glue your tealights to the top of your empty rolls.  Paint rolls white, or any color if you wish.  Fasten them to your ceiling using fishing wire and tape, and voila – you just transformed your room into the great hall. Check out some excellent decor photos from This Calls for a Party for even more inspiration.

8. Platform 9 and 3/4 Party Entrance

Come on, you have to do it – how long have you wanted to run straight for a brick wall and be magically transported into a whole new world?  Now is your chance.  Either with a spare sheet, or some paper – paint on a nice brick pattern.  You can even buy pre made brick at certain stores if the party gods are in your favor.  Make sure you pin this up along with a sign that says platform 9 and 3/4, at an entryway without a wall directly behind it – you don’t want to injuring your Muggle (or “no madge”) guests.  We were inspired by the beautiful entrance Judith Fernstrom Photography created – take a look!

9.  Other Harry Potter Friends

Not going to lie, we would totally still be down to celebrate and do Harry Potter stuff by ourselves if that’s the way things worked out – but we have to say celebrating with fellow Potterheads is just the best.  After all, Harry was only able to save the wizarding world with the help of his friends. Harry Potter was one of the first fandoms that spread across the internet and brought people together from all over the world.  You can easily spot someone repping Hogwarts anytime you go out in public. And when you do, you have an instant friend in this person since you both cherish the world of Harry Potter.

Now go out and cast some spells, and celebrate the joy of all things Potter! Let us know what you think of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child!
